英語脳
日本語で考え、英語を話そうとするから、たどたどしい。アタマの中で英語が生まれなければ、本当に英語を話せるようにはならない気がする。けれど、英語で考えるには、ボキャブラリーが乏しすぎる。でも、ボキャブラリーが豊かだから、英語脳があるとも言えない。なんとか成長させたい、私の中の英語脳。

Bush ducked both shoes
On a whirlwind trip shrouded in secrecy and marred by dissent, President George W. Bush on Sunday hailed progress in the wars that define his presidency and got a size-10 reminder of his unpopularity when a man hurled two shoes at him during a news conference in Iraq.
"This is your farewell kiss, you dog!" shouted the protester in Arabic, later identified as Muntadar al-Zeidi, a correspondent for Al-Baghdadia television, an Iraqi-owned station based in Cairo, Egypt. "This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq."
Bush ducked both shoes as they whizzed past his head and landed with a thud against the wall behind him.
"It was a size 10," Bush joked later.

Cancer to pass heart disease as No. 1 killer (ロイター)
Cancer is on pace to supplant heart disease as the No. 1 cause of death worldwide in 2010, with a growing burden in poor countries thanks to more cigarette smoking and other factors, global health experts said on Tuesday.
ガンが、心臓疾患以上の死因ナンバーワンになる。
たしかに、そうでしょうね。
poor countries
という言葉が気になります。
そして、
more cigarette smoking
タバコはどうしても止められない人々。
他人の迷惑になっているとしても、
公衆の面前で吸いたくなる感情を
抑えることができない。
やっぱり、病気ですね。

今のアメリカ人が好きな言葉が、
bailout（救済）らしいです。
というか、
検索数の多いキーワード、
というのが正確な表現ですが...
私も、英語記事のなかに、
たびたび出てくる単語だったので、
気になっていました。
その関連で面白いのは、
アメリカのビッグ３と言われるGM、フォード、クライスラーの
経営責任者3人が、250億ドルの緊急融資を求めて、
議会公聴会にやって来たこと。
一人の議員さんが、尋ねたこと。
"raise their hand if they flew here commercial."
"Let the record show, no hands went up, Second, I'm going to ask you to raise your hand
if you are planning to sell your jet in place now and fly back commercial. Let the record show, no hands went up."
自家用ジェットで来た3人に、
「自分たちの生活レベルを変えるつもりがなくて、
税金を無心に来たのか？」
という質問を叩きつけたのでしょう。
うーん、鋭い！

今朝のニュースだと、
経営陣の報酬を1ドルにするなどの
再建計画を立てて、340億ドルの緊急支援に
変わっていくようです。
また、明日には、公聴会が...どうなるかな。

Space shuttle Endeavour and its seven astronauts safely returned to Earth on Sunday, taking a detour to sunny California after storms hit the main landing strip in Florida.Endeavour touched down at 4:25 p.m. EST, wrapping up a 16-day trip that left the international space station freshly remodeled and capable of housing bigger crews.

Nepal's Buddha boy
Nepal's Buddha boy returns to jungle to meditate
A Nepalese teenager revered by many as a reincarnation of Buddha has returned to the jungle to meditate after emerging for less than two weeks, officials said Saturday.
Ram Bahadur Bamjan, 18, reappeared on Nov. 10 after several months of meditation to bless thousands of his followers, speaking to them on at least two occasions.
He made his last appearance on Friday and then returned to the jungle to meditate, said Biswo Prakash Newpane, a government administrator in the area. It was not clear when he would return again.

The official start of gay marriages came on Wednesday, less than a month after Connecticut's highest court legalized the unions.
コネチカット州で、同性婚が始まるようで、
おお、そんなの大丈夫かなぁ、と思うのですが、
どうなるんです？
もちろん、そうじゃない人もいますけれど、
人類を「消滅」させる結婚でしょう、それって。
科学の力で、人工授精や代理母を使えば、
子供は生まれるかもしれませんが、
ある意味、人類全体の自殺を許したような法律に、
私には思えるのですが...
でも、好きなものはしょうがない、
ということになるのでしょうか。

Obama arrives for White House tour
The Bushes welcomed the Obamas to the White House on Monday, visiting for nearly two hours and offering the nation a glimpse of a new first family at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. President-elect Obama and President Bush met in the Oval Office, their first substantive one-on-one session, while first lady Laura Bush and Obama's wife, Michelle, talked in the White House residence.
The president later escorted his successor to his limousine. Obama's wife was leaving separately after her discussions with Laura Bush.
